David Ehrenberg, President & CEO of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) gave the keynote speech on “The New Urban Manufacturing – Challenges and Lessons from the Brooklyn Navy Yard” and presented solutions for the integration of industry in the city. In doing so he provided strong impetus for Berlin as an industrial location and city of the future.

On a day full of burning questions and heated debates, Florida Eis, partner of the Industry Master Plan, helped to cool things down. The State of Berlin and its partners from the Industrial Policy Network are developing the third version of the Berlin Industrial City Master Plan for 2018 – 2021. The Florida Eis manufactory has been based in Spandau for 90 years, representing traditional and at the same time future-oriented production in the city.

The Keynote Speech on Innovations in Logistics
Stefanie Brickwede, Managing Director of Mobility goes Additive e.V. and Head of Additive Manufacturing, Deutsche Bahn AG gave an inspiring keynote on the opportunities offered by additive manufacturing. This includes, for example, the potential shortening of the lead time for new products. More than 70 companies from all over Europe are part of the Berlin network “Mobility goes Additive”. In the future, they will move to a new location in the Marienpark business district in the south of the city.

Prof. Dr. Ingomar Kelbassa, head of development of the production technology “Gas and Power” and Company Core Technology Additive Manufacturing, Siemens AG, talked to presenter and journalist Christiane Stein about the current Siemensstadt project “Werner-von-Siemens Centre for Industry and Science”. On the Siemens Campus, synergies are created through the interaction of research and industry, which will play an important role in the area of innovation and key technologies for both Siemens and the city of Berlin in the future.

In his closing remarks, Christian Rickerts, State Secretary of the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises, thanked the participants for the exciting discussions and the professional exchange. Rickerts emphasized the potential and synergies that arise from the interaction of science and industry in Berlin.
